Polymarket Sees $600K in Bets on NFL Opener Amid Regulatory Green Light
Crypto-based prediction market Polymarket has drawn over $600,000 in wagers for the NFL season opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. The figure surpasses the £150,000 ($201,000) handled by Europe's Betfair, though it remains a fraction of the $100 million typically wagered on single games through traditional channels.
The platform's surge comes as founder Shayne Coplan confirmed regulatory approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, enabling operations across all 50 states—including Texas, where conventional sports betting is banned. A recent social media campaign teased "Legal football trading is coming to ALL 50 states this fall," capitalizing on the timing as Polymarket's volumes dipped from a $2 billion peak during November's election frenzy to $664 million in August.
